What does your retirement / finances look like compared to mine?

08 Jun

I’ve worked really hard on straightening out my finances over the last two years. I just wanted to see how my approach compares to others. The personal finance sites make it seem like everyone is maxing everything out:

My wife and I contribute about 28,000 into our 401K’s each year and we max out our IRA’s (8,000) each year.

We might have trouble on the IRA in 2007 because of income limits. It that happens, I’m planning on just opening a mutual fund account on the side.

So far, we have @ 45K. We’re both 27.

Besides that, we have a mortgage and car payments. Everything else is paid and I plan on starting a separate mutual fund for the kids college (I don’t like all the rules associated with the college savings plans).

Can money in retirement accounts be used to purchase property?

03 Jun

I am considering how much money to contribute to my retirement accounts and part of the decision invovles whether this money can be used to purchase property. If the money in my 401k, IRA, and Roth IRA is off limits, then it seems that I should contribute less because it will prolong the time before I have saved enough for a down payment on a house. Does anyone have any advice on this matter?

If it helps I’m in my mid 20’s and currently enrolled in my company’s 401K program, but would like to open an additional retirement account.

How do I calculate earned interest for each month for a 401k retirement plan?

26 May

This is for a project for my Economics class, and I’ve used as many resources as I can to find this… and I’m stuck.

The hypothetical situation below explains what I’m supposed to do:

After initially picking a 401k plan (upon research I chose a Bond Mutual Fund for this), I’m supposed to “keep track of my earned interest for my mutual fund” per month.

My monthly income is $2500 and I plan to contribute 8% of that to the 401k, which would be $200/month.

How do I figure out the earned interest per month? I have no idea what the interest rate is or how to find that. I’ve researched online and got 5.25%, in which I have no idea is correct.

Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

25 May

A am recently retired and have a sizeable 401K account in a balanced fund (equities, bonds, short-term funds). Now that I have received benefit of tax savings in my working years am I better off to leave my money in the fund or move it to several FDIC insured IRA CD accounts to benefit from compounding interest?

Are Retirement Plans (e.g. IRA, 401k) Another Scam to Steal Wealth from Middle-Class?

23 May

My reasoning:

http://jasonhommelforum.com/forums/showthread.php?t=209&highlight=capital+gains+IRA+IRS

See also the links on this Question for more info about my vision of imminent hyperinflation:

http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=At_Gqqez54puDwAd0FvkVALzy6IX?qid=20060801090740AAVq3t4

Actually the hyperinflation started a long time ago and only recently feeding back into prices (see exploding gap between nominal GDP/income vs. M3/debt):

.

===================
“ElOsoBravo”, let rephrase the question more simply for you:

With taxes in Western countries likely to increase drastically (baby boomer retirement, massive debts), what idiot would prefer to pay 50 – 80% taxes later on ALL HIS GAINS via the deferred tax scheme of retirement plans, versus paying 5 – 15% capital gains tax through 2010?????

And if you think the 50% – 80% tax scenario is unlikely, then how are we going to unbankrupt our negative -$20 trillion aggregate net worth?

.

================
“Veritatum17″ numerous errors:

* Max. capital gains tax rate is 15%, not higher even for millionaires.

* Roth IRA contributions are taxed at income tax rates, e.g. 35% max.

* Roth IRA withdrawals taxed at 10%+income tax, before 59.5 age

* Ratio, not “difference”, of GDP/M3 is economist’s theory of money, called “Velocity of Money Supply”.

* $4500 will become $45,000 or $450,000 with hyperinflation. Very big $.

* Investors (not “govt” seisure) will withdraw from IRA early, because dollar will become worthless in hyperinflation, they want to buy something real, e.g. physical gold or farm land.

* DinesLetter.com investments have increase 1000% in 3 years (36 months).

* CPI is a lie (hyperinflation is reality, see charts):

http://www.kitco.com/ind/Willie/jul282006.html

* “tighter money supply” is another lie

* USA lost manufacturing, infrastructure crumbling

* Govt will (has been) hyperinflate away the debt

Am I able to qualify for a deductible IRA if the only retirement plan my company offers is a 401K?

15 May

My question concerns only a fully deductible IRA, and the confusion over the IRS wording “to quality….you must not be eligible to participate in a company retirement plan”. My company does not offer a pension plan , but does offer a 401k plan, so does that disqualify me from a deductible IRA ? Basically the question comes down to the defination of a “company retirement plan”.
