My employer has no type of 401k plan, can you contribute to both an existing traditional IRA and a Roth IRA?

20 Jun

I rolled over an existing 401k into a traditional IRA. My current firm doesn’t have a 401k or any other kind of plan. I’d like to contribute to my traditional IRA but I’m being told that I can’t contribute to both a traditinal IRA and a Roth IRA at the same time unless the one is from the current employer.

How do I locate my 401k plan?

08 Jun

I had a 401K with a former employer, that employer has since passed away and his children are closing the business. I would like to locate that account and fin dout much money is in it and maybe continue to pay on my own, but I don’t know how to locate that plan. His children are very irresponsible and think if they tell me that will take money from thier pocket so they have refused to tell me anything. Is there another way? Should just pay the penalties if/when I find that plan and start my own account?

Question on 401k plan and IRS?

07 Jun

I got laid off, took my 401K monies, Fidelity took the penalties and tax out. I took most of that money and put as a downpayment on a house. I put the rest of the money in my taxes as income (did through Turbo Tax which did not flag me), now IRS wants to tax me again on the money I put as a downpayment on my first house, so that would be almost 40% tax? Is this correct? I thought you had up to 10,000 to put as a downpayment on your 1st home not to get taxed again? Help.
I got laid off and then moved and got another job and put it in an IRA savings account, does that make a difference?

What do you guys think of my company’s 401K plan?

07 Jun

In a nutshell my company matches 50% of every dollar you put in your 401K retirement plan but only up to 6% of your yearly salary. Does this sound like a good enough 401K plan to continue working in this company?
Well actually i’m 20 years old but i am thinking about my future as well as my present state. I don’t make too much money in this company about $10.25 an hour but i guess that’s why the 401K plan is somewhat good.

Can I contribute to both a 401K plan and an IRA plan?

02 Jun

I work 2 jobs; my FT employer doesn’t contribute to the 401K, so I don’t participate. My PT employer’s plan does, so I put in 20%. Can I also open an IRA and contribute to it along with my PT job’s 401K without tax implications?

Former 401K plan being held for quarter before rollover – laws?

30 May

Does anyone know the laws surrounding time limits on holding 401K money? I am attempting to rollover my 401K from Principal Financial Group (MetLife) into Thrivent Financial. Principal is refusing to release my money until the end of the quarter (I put through the request in October). Since it’s my money I don’t think they have a right to hold onto the funds for 3+ months. It’s scheduled to be reviewed in mid-January and released within 15 days but I’d like to get it before the end of the year. Does anyone know the law # or code so I call Principal and tell them “for sure” that they’re operating out of legal bounds? Thanks for any help.

What’s the maximum someone can pay into a 401k plan in 2005 including company match? $15k or more?

27 May

My company matches a portion of my proceeds and I just went over the $15k mark for the year. My question is, can my TOTAL contributions exceed $15k as long as my personal contribution is limited to $15k and the excess is from company matching funds? If yes, what’s the limit on the TOTAL contrib including personal and company matching funds? $43k?
