Could someone please fill me in on the differences (postive and negative) between Vanguard’s Target Retirement account and thier IRA accounts? Would one be more beneficial than another. If it helps I’m in my mid 20’s and currently enrolled in my company’s 401K program, but would like to open an additional retirement account.

401k vs. IRAs – Investing Advice Please…?

16 May

I have been investing in a 401k through my employer for about a year now. I started out investing 2%, then at the beginning of this year, I upped it to 4%. This week, due to the losses I’ve experienced (over 11% just this year) I have decided to cancel my investments into my 401k. So right now, there’s a little less than $2k in my 401k. I’ve also considered investing into IRAs. Though I know nothing much about IRAs, or even 401k, I know I should invest in something for my “future.”

With the way the economy is, I’m not sure what to invest in or what I can do to get by anymore. My husband even switched jobs and is making $200 more per pay period and we still see ourselves struggling. Food costs and gas prices are up, and it’s almost getting too expensive for both of us to work. Does anyone have any suggestions about investing or any other suggestions? It’s appreciated.
I just turned 28 this year, I’m buying my own house (and have been for the past 5 years) and I have 3 kids in grade school, which I have to pay $300 biweekly for daycare, and just found out that it will go up $10 per kid per week. So by dropping my investment in the 401k, we can afford the daycare.

We almost think it’s worth it for my husband to find a job working offset hours so that our children won’t have to go to daycare. If that’s even a possibility, we’ll do it. But for the meantime, we both work full time jobs and our take home totals about $1850 bi-weekly.

IRA’s vs. 401K’s?

14 May

The company I work for was just bought out. The new owner is an idividual as opposed to the old owner who was a corporation. The corporation was able to offer employees a decent retirement and benefits package. This new owner is trying but can’t match the deal we had previously. I have 10 years invested in the position and do not want to change careers, but will if it turns out to be the better choice. The new owner just proposed the idea of simple IRA’s to everyone who will be working for him. The old corporation is cooperating and if we decide to roll over our 401K’s they are willing to help us with the transition. My worry is the matching. The new owner will only match up to 3% on the IRA. Does an IRA work the same was as a 401K in terms to matching? I am confused.

IRA’s and 401(k) vs. overseas alternatives?

08 May

Depending on employment and other factors, I might retire overseas. Not certain where. What are the overseas equivalents of American IRA and 401(k) plans and how do they compare, in general, to what’s offered in the U.S.? Are there online resources for such information on, for instance, Canada, U.K., Germany, Luxembourg, Italy, Hong Kong plans?

I have a fulltime job, and also am an independent contractor. I usually contribute 4k annual to my traditional IRA to get the tax write-off. I heard there are some limitations if you make more than a 100k annual.
