Should I roll my 401K from my soon-to-be previous employer into a traditional IRA?

26 Jun

I am leaving my current employer in the next few days. Should I roll my 401K and pension fund from my soon-to-be previous employer into a traditional IRA?

My new employer offers 401K that matches up to the first 5% and allows me to roll my previous 401K into theirs. Should I do that, instead? According to the benefits literature from my new employer, my 401K with my new employer will be fully vested after my 4th anniversary there. Will I lose any value in my existing 401K by rolling mine into theirs if I leave my new employer before my 4th anniversary?

taking $ from our fund (401k rollover after spouse retired) is treated as taxable income. Any way to prevent?

09 Jun

We have to borrow from “ourselves” this way in order to fund a biz and other expenses. But it is treated as income which puts us in a very, very high bracket.

I think if we take some and save it in a ROTH ira (or other) we save but hubby says it doesn’t help and we would spend more.

Any ideas?

Is there a maximum total amount that can be deducted pretax from a paycheck?

07 Jun

Considering a 401k max of $15,000, FSA of $4,000 (my company limits), and deductions for medical, dental, and life insurance benefits, is there a maximum amount of *total* pretax deductions?

401K contribution deducted from Federal Tax refund question continued.?

07 Jun

Thank you both for your reply before. I ran all the numbers again. I am using TaxAct Online which I have used for several years without problems. ‘09 is the first year I have paid into a 401K.
I’m trying to find the best way to explain exactly the problem here.
It showed an anticipated refund amount on the online form until I entered the information from 12d and then I saw the anticipated refund amount drop by the amount of the contribution for 2009.
Yes my line 1 is less by the contribution amount from line 3.
I know it seems wrong that the amount I put into 401K is removed from my anticipated refund, meaning I am effectively paying in tax the amount I already paid into my 401K.
I don’t know where to go from here and I know sending a “contact us” message on the site is about as effective as trying to simplify the tax code.
It is good I didn’t put in much more in the year since I have to pay it all to the IRS again. Something definitely is wrong.
I think I must use another tax preparation software unless anyone can tell me something else I might be doing wrong, unless it is TaxAct Online that is in error. But I doubt I could ever find that out.
Any more suggestions?
Thank you again,
Michael

Can you move money in IRA from one fund/stock to purchase another?

06 Jun

I just rolled my 401-k and pension into rollover IRA.

My 401K was invested in various mutual funds and employer stock. I now want to buy 1000 shares of my new employer stock.

Do I decide what to liquidate within the IRA? And if so, If I use funds currently in one stock/mutual fund to buy the new stock, will I be paying fee/penalty?

New IRA is with Fidelity.

Better to withdraw funds from a 401K or IRA?

04 Jun

Assuming you can withdraw early from an IRA account.

Right now I have a 401K and I might need to take an emergency withdrawal in the next couple of months. I know there is a penalty. Would it be better to roll over to a roth ira right now and withdraw in a couple of months? What kind of penalties am I looking at?

what is a partial distribution from my 401k, and if I do this do I have to start over in being 100% vested?

28 May

I am 100% vested in my 401k, but I have received a paper from my fidelity account and they would like for me to either rollover a partial amount or direct rollover. I am not sure what would happen if I do a partial rollover. I am not sure what a partial rollover is and if I do this would it affect my being 100% vested.

Is it true you shouldn’t transfer your 401k from a previous employer into an IRA because IRA money is exposed?

27 May

because IRA money is completely exposed to lawsuits or bankruptcy or claims by greedy doctors and hospitals??
In other words, I heard that any money in 401k it completely off limits if you’re sued, or if you rack up huge medical bills, or any other liability. No one can ever touch 401k money. BUT, IRA money can be confiscated at will by any greedy lawyer or doctor or bankrupcy or any other parasite. Is this true? It’s critical for me to find out, not because i plan on being sued or sick any time, but i want my money to remain my money. And there are so many greedy parasites in this world these days.
