Can I transfer my retirement’s cash-out option to an IRA so I don’t have to pay tax on that amount?

28 May

I want to take the lumpsum cash out from my retirement and live off the interest by investing it in an IRA.Is the amount going to be taxable when I transfer it to IRA or 401(K)?

If your employer don’t offer matches to your 401(k) contribution, do you instead opt for an IRA?

19 May

One of my friends’ workplace does not offer employer matches to an employee’s 401(k) contributions. Does my friend instead opt for an IRA account (he does not qualify for a Roth IRA since his income exceeds the maximum income allowed) as his retirement investment vehicle? Also, if you could, what are the retirement investment vehicles for the self-employed? Your advice is greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.

I have a 401k with Fidelity but there are many stocks I don’t have access to with Fidelity ?

What would be the best online website to use to purchase stocks. I’m new to this so I would like something that is cheap and easy!
As I said I’m looking to buy stocks by myself not thru a mutual fund so I’m not looking at Schwab, I would go with Vanguard if I had my choice thru work but I need info on stock trading websites, I have heard good things about Scottrade..

Why do 401k and IRA have different limits? Don’t all 401k contribution go into either IRA or Roth IRA?

18 Mar

I am still very confused after reading the answers on various sites on the difference between 401k and IRA.

Yes, 401k is the company plan, the employee is nice and matches part of the amount you contribute. But doesn’t all the money you put into 401k end up in either your IRA or Roth IRA?

If so, why is 401k limit so much higher than IRA?
If not, what other avenues can the money you put into the 401k go to?
Thanks Charlie. Last year for my company’s 401K, they matched 50% of all contributions to both IRA and Roth IRA. I did not hit the limit for 401K, but when doing my taxes, I realized I exceeded the combined limit of $4000 for all IRAs.

Why does 401k have a much higher limit, if all contributions will still go into the IRAs?
