I have all my retirment savings in my employer’s traditional 401k program and I am 100% vested. I’am wondering if it is a good idea to take a half of that value and roll over into a traditional IRA with a different investment company. It’s attractive since I will have more choices of investment, plus its money no longer having any connection with my employer and totally under my control.

What frightens me though is if I could be boxing myself into a corner later in life when I want to withdraw the money. Not sure if I would hit maximum limits. Though very unlikely, if I ever withdrew the money early would I be hit with more complicated withdrawal penalties and fees? Would management fees eat up more of my savings? Any advise or if you could share resources appreciated. Example data as follows:

Age: 38
Amount in current 401K = 50K
Amount thinking of rolling over = 25K
Thanks, the 401k is with my current employer. I spoke to the 401k administrator and they said it is okay to roll over part into a traditional IRA with another administrator. Does that change your advise or do you think I’m being given wrong info? Appreciate your response.

I am looking at switching jobs and am wondering where it would be best to put my current 401k money…into a new 401k, a traditional IRA or a ROTH IRA. I currently have a ROTH IRA and enjoy the ability to invest in what I want. I also enjoy knowing that the money I see will not be taxable upon retirement. I’m leaning this way because I’m 24, my wife is 22. We are both engineers, we have an AGI of a shade under 100k for 2007, and I anticipate retiring in a higher tax bracket (currently in the 25% range). Another factor is does the rollover count as a contribution for the current year? Also, are there any tax implications for any of the choices?? Any information on this would be helpful as I am pretty ignorant when it comes to rollovers. Thanks!

I am leaving my current employer in the next few days. Should I roll my 401K and pension fund from my soon-to-be previous employer into a traditional IRA?

My new employer offers 401K that matches up to the first 5% and allows me to roll my previous 401K into theirs. Should I do that, instead? According to the benefits literature from my new employer, my 401K with my new employer will be fully vested after my 4th anniversary there. Will I lose any value in my existing 401K by rolling mine into theirs if I leave my new employer before my 4th anniversary?

I’m 24yrs old, I’m out of debt and I put almost 40% of my 45 – 50K/yr paycheck into 401k, money markets and an IRA. I’ve copied and pasted a breakdown of the different categories that I can put my 401K funds into. Right now I have it all in Balanced/Assest Location. I’ve currently lost 28%. I’m not really worried about that (even though I’d like to limit my losses as much as possible) cause I know I have a long way to retirement. Which of these options or maybe a combination will be the best choice for todays economy. Thanks for your help.

Asset Class Descriptions
Many plan participants mix and match investments from different categories to help them diversify their retirement savings:

 Short-Term Fixed Income
These types of investments include any investments that can be quickly turned into cash without losing much value. They may include investment options such as Treasury bills, Certificates of Deposit (CDs), commercial paper and money market instruments. They are considered to be among the least risky forms of investments. However, they are more likely to have a lower rate of return than stocks or bonds over long periods of time.

 Fixed Income
These types of investments are loans to a company or a government entity. They generally carry more risk than cash equivalents, but less than stocks. Their values can go up and down, though usually not as much as stocks.

 Balanced/Asset Allocation
These types of investments will generally hold a combination of Fixed Income and Equity investments.

 Large U.S. Equity
These types of investments include shares of ownership in companies. They generally carry more risk than other investments and have the potential for higher returns. They may be a good choice to help your contributions grow if your retirement is years away. Investments in U.S. companies with large market capitalization.

 Small/Mid U.S. Equity
These types of investments include shares of ownership in companies. They generally carry more risk than other U.S. equity investments and have the potential for higher returns. They may be a good choice to help your contributions grow if your retirement is years away. Investments in U.S. companies with small market capitalization.

 International Equity
These types of investments include shares of ownership in companies. They generally carry more risk than all U.S. equity investments and have the potential for higher returns. They may be a good choice to help your contributions grow if your retirement is years away. Investments in businesses with their principal place of business or principal office outside the United States.

Now that you have an understanding of the basic investment types, select Investment Performance to access details about the investment options available in each category.

I’ve worked really hard on straightening out my finances over the last two years. I just wanted to see how my approach compares to others. The personal finance sites make it seem like everyone is maxing everything out:

My wife and I contribute about 28,000 into our 401K’s each year and we max out our IRA’s (8,000) each year.

We might have trouble on the IRA in 2007 because of income limits. It that happens, I’m planning on just opening a mutual fund account on the side.

So far, we have @ 45K. We’re both 27.

Besides that, we have a mortgage and car payments. Everything else is paid and I plan on starting a separate mutual fund for the kids college (I don’t like all the rules associated with the college savings plans).

My husband is a teacher, and recently changed school districts — moving from a private school to a public school. He has a 403(b) plan with his old employer. I’m considering rolling it over into an IRA. Is there a time limit on making this decision? (1 or 2 years from now if I decide to roll it over into an IRA, is it too late?)
Follow-up question: when does the clock start ticking for the 90-days? From the last paycheck? Or the last contribution to the 403(b)? In this case — the last contribution to the 403(b) was about 2 months before the last paycheck from the job.

I had a 401K with a former employer, that employer has since passed away and his children are closing the business. I would like to locate that account and fin dout much money is in it and maybe continue to pay on my own, but I don’t know how to locate that plan. His children are very irresponsible and think if they tell me that will take money from thier pocket so they have refused to tell me anything. Is there another way? Should just pay the penalties if/when I find that plan and start my own account?
